Summarizing a few of the devilry of food products
Toxic / health issues
Some examples (even though I'm not an expert on the area)
- Packaging
- Food
- I've seen reports of olive oil where one have replaced the actual olive oil with more or less toxic oils.
- Mercury in wheat
- Arsenic in rice
- Acrylamide in potato chips
- Saturated fat
- Food additives
- Modified starch (not toxic but questionable because it is used to make it look like more food than it really is)
- Nitrate (used to color for example ham pink)
- Antibiotics in cheese
- Sugar, (Might be alright in candy, but it appears everywhere)
New substances
A problem is that the industry is often one step ahead of the authorities. When ever the chemical is forbidden the industry just modify the substance it a little bit and go on as usual.
The wiki site could just inform the user how long the manufacturer has been around what trackrecord they have etc. etc.
Non-environmentally-friendly products
See for example:
One third of our greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture
