hostdepartment.com is generally OK up until you want to cancel a service, then they turn nasty.

Maybe I am extra sensitive, but I have been the victim of other companies that just continues to silently charge your credit card.

I wanted to cancel the account because I didn't need it anymore.

I looked in their FAQ and their forum and searched the internet on how to cancel an account, without any luck.

Then I tried their chat, and just as I had feared they said that the account would automatically continue, and that one has to call them to cancel an account. Since I'm on the other side of the world and since calling means international calling for me which I find a bit awkward (since I'm not really that good in speaking English (especially not in a confrontational situation)) So I asked if I could use email instead, and one could, but then one must still call.

So I sent an email. The next day I had two emails, one that asked me for the "exact reason" and the other one redirected me to a site to give them a review. So to the email asking for the reason, I answered pretty much what I tell here: I want a service which I easily can cancel, I don't want a to be forced to battle it out with sales people who do everything they can to prevent you from leaving. They answer:

The moment, we receive any email or chat or call for account cancellation, before retaining the customer, we remove auto-payment details and disable auto-renewal 
mode on the customer's account.

If you verify your account, you couldn't find any such details on your account. So, your account won't get auto-renewed. Only the invoice gets generated when it's due for renewal. If you would like to continue,
you need to pay the invoice by entering the details again; else need to send us the email to proceed with account cancellation procedure.

I have checked my account settings, and I don't even know what it is I'm supposed to (not) see.

I guess I just have to wait and see what happens.

2015 March

3 months later I get an email indicating that the account will be prolonged by an other year. And they ask me to have money on my PayPal account.
